Ilse in Rio: Start om 16:20

Twintig ploegen in de categorie 'Lightweight Women's Double Sculls' (LW2x) maken vandaag hun opwachting in vier heats.

Ilse en Maaike nemen het op tegen Nieuw-Zeeland, Japan, Vietnam en Roemenië. De ploegen die als eerste en tweede eindigen in hun heat plaatsen zich rechtstreeks voor de halve finale. De overige deelnemers plaatsen zich voor de herkansingen.

De omstandigheden op de roeibaan in Rio de Janeiro zijn uitdagend te noemen: grote golven rollen van opzij de roeibaan in en ook de wind is van de partij. Een vergelijking wordt gemaakt met het EK in Brandenburg. Tot zaterdag zag de FISA geen reden om wijzigingen aan te brengen in het wedstrijdschema:

“We look at three important factors,” says FISA President Jean-Christophe Rolland. “Safety, fairness and ‘rowability’. Today, we determined that the athletes were not in danger out on the course, the conditions were considered to be the same across the six lanes, and it was rowable, meaning boats were not sinking. The weather is not predicted to get better over the next four days and we will continue to use these three factors to determine how racing will continue. As of now, there is no change to the schedule. These tough conditions will test the skill of the athletes.”
